Chiropractors practice an alternative medicine style which relies on the belief that the body can heal itself through gentle manipulation of the soft tissue. They believe that certain spinal bones or vertebrae have areas which are vital for the smooth functioning of the nervous system. These chiropractic spinal adjustments, correct misalignments in the spine that cause pain or pressure on other body parts. Chiropractor treatment is used to treat a variety of ailments including neck pain, back pain, headaches, dental problems and even learning disabilities.
A chiropractor first diagnoses the problem using x-rays, CT scans, and sometimes MRI tests. Once they have determined that the source of the discomfort is indeed a misalignment in the spine, they may recommend treatment. During a chiropractic adjustment, the practitioner will apply steady direct pressure to the spine to help it align properly. They may also recommend strengthening exercises to help prevent any future problems. The practitioner will adjust the patient’s posture and adjust the Kilogram Force Distribution (KDF) using their hands to do so.
When seeking treatment, patients should first meet with their chiropractor to review the medical history. This includes a physical exam, laboratory tests, and listening to the patient’s complaints. The chiropractor will then review their patients’ spinal cord structure and look at the cause of pain and attempt to determine a plan for treatment.
After the cause is determined, the chiropractor will discuss their treatment options. Patients will be given a treatment protocol to follow along with instructions on how they can improve their posture, daily activities and exercise, and how they can avoid future problems. In some cases, pain medications may be prescribed to relieve chronic back pain. Other methods may include chiropractic adjustments, exercise, lifestyle changes or medications.
In most cases, chiropractic treatment will not only treat the painful joints and muscles, but will also improve overall joint and muscle health and function. Many times, muscle weakness is the cause of low back pain, and by strengthening the back muscles, the patient can achieve pain relief. Chiropractic treatments also help to strengthen the musculature of the arms and legs. By working with the skeletal system, chiropractors are able to restore joint mobility and flexibility.
Neck and headache pain are common conditions that chiropractors address on a daily basis. These headaches may include tension in the neck or the head, which in turn puts stress on the nervous system. Often, when a person has a headache, they experience tingling and weakness in their muscles. A chiropractor will take a history, exam, and ask questions about the patient’s medical history to determine if there are any underlying medical issues causing the pain.
If your spine is aligned incorrectly, it can put unnecessary stress on the discs between your vertebrae. This can affect the nerves in your spine, resulting in pinched nerves and chronic pain. To correct incorrect posture, a chiropractor may recommend a series of stretches and/or strengthening exercises. The chiropractor may also recommend that certain postures are modified. These adjustments and/or modifications can range from using an extra pillow to a complete change in posture.
In addition to addressing the pain, a chiropractor can also use their hands to help strengthen and realign your spine, improving your posture. With their hands, they can realign your bones, which can relieve pressure on your nerves. They can realign your vertebrae, which can alleviate pain and help prevent disorders such as chronic fatigue syndrome. Finally, some chiropractors can perform spinal adjustments and/or therapeutic massage to help relax tight muscles throughout your body. Many times, an acupuncturist, or masseuse, is also involved in a chiropractic procedure. A Chiropractor is often much more involved than just the pain-relieving methods.
